The Gears

The speed of a gear, S, varies
inversely as the number of teeth, T.
If a gear with 4 teeth goes 54 rpm,
how fast will a gear with 8 teeth go?

If you need help click     www.TheMathWebSite.com
and on the index of topics page click
Variation/Inverse/Quiz. Then click on any question,
or its steps, to see the full solution.

S1 / S2 = T2 / T1
54 / S2 = 8 / 4
(8)(S2) = (54)(4)
S2 = (54)(4)/(8)
S2 = 27
Thus S=27 rpm when T=8 teeth.
